Working Dogs
Appenzellers are a working breed that are able to control cattle. They were kept as general farm dogs, working as livestock guardian dogs and as herding dogs when necessary, as well as guarding the farmers' families, homes, herds, and flocks. The guarding function was especially necessary in earlier times, when wolves and other large predators threatened livestock and people. They were also used for pulling carts.
Since these high-energy athletic dogs may not have much 'work' these days, they love to play, run, swim and walk. They are excellent hiking, backpacking and jogging companions. If they get some good exercise each day, they can be content to spend the rest of the time laying at your feet.
